I love Jack Kirby, because the man had a style and flavor that was visionary. What I dig most about his work is that it prompts me to reflect on the world we live in. With the title of this post, I jab at the (now) comedic nature of the cover for this particular issue of Kirby’s Silver Star — would you believe that there was a time when giant negroes roamed the earth?!? I really dug growing up as a youngblood and dreaming (and scheming) on the future. The possibilities that ran through my mind had no bounds. One thing that was never part of my hustle as a youth was trying to figure out how to stay young. Culturally, there are many cats out there who don’t want to grow old. If you choose not to get older (as if you could actually avoid the laws of nature), how can you expect to claim you’ve ever lived?

I have always wanted to live long enough to grow old. I would imagine it is the only true superpower that exists in our reality — the ability to live as long as we possibly can by savoring every adventure as we experience it. I never wanted to live the Toys R’ Us lifestyle of never growing up. The older I get, the more I can get down with everything this world has to offer. Isn’t that worth the stretch? Think about it.
